At Brisbane Bayside State College, Junior Secondary Mathematics teaching and learning focus on building students' creativity through developing positive mathematical mindsets and building skills using Building Thinking Classrooms. Students are encouraged to understand concepts deeply, build fluency, reason logically, and solve problems effectively by working cooperatively.
Our approach combines inquiry-based learning (launch, explore, consolidate, check for understaning) with explicit teaching to support diverse learning styles and promote engagement.

Subjects Offered – Mathematics
Mathematics equips students with essential skills and knowledge across Number, Algebra, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics and Probability. It develops the numeracy capabilities necessary for personal, work, and civic life, while laying the foundation for specialized mathematical studies and professional applications.
All students follow the Australian Mathematics Curriculum from Years 7 to 9. In Year 10, students may choose between the Core or Advanced mathematics curriculum for Semester 1.
As students select their senior study pathways during SET Plans, they are allocated to preparatory mathematics courses in Semester 2. For more information, visit the
Senior Secondary Curriculum page.

Mathematics Tutorials
The Mathematics teachers run tutorials before and after school. Students are encouraged to come along and get small group and individual support as needed. It is also a great opportunity for students to do homework with peers.
Mathematics Competitions
We offer the Australian Mathematics Competition in August for all students. Junior students are also invited to participate in Maths Team Challenges supported by the Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers. Lunchtime sessions are run to support students to prepare for these events.
