Greater Brisbane Schools sports

GBS – Greater Brisbane Schools was founded in 2004 as a means to allow some of the biggest South East Queensland schools to compete in a high level competition across an array of sports.  The completion has evolved over the past few years to meet the changing face of school sports and the local communities and is now run as a series of gala days (Saturday Round robin carnival) that seems to suit both venues and competitors.  The five Gala days are held over the first three terms of school to allow maximum participation from student but also to steer clear of qualifying meets for the specific sports.
Sports include (in order) Netball, Futsal, Badminton, Basketball, Touch Football and Volleyball.  Each school is designated a sport to coordinate and at BBSC with our facilities we are lucky enough to run both Futsal and volleyball.  Schools that compete in this competition include Albany Creek SHS, Ferny Grove SHS, Kenmore SHS and MacGregor SHS.  These events run on a Saturday and generally start at 8am and finish by 3pm, however each sport is different and each school has variations with the format of the day.
Since the inclusion of year 7 into high school teams are now set according to year level.  Junior Boys and Girls consist of year 7 and 8 students, Middle teams utilise year 9 and 10 students, and the open teams are formed with year 11 and 12 students.  Each team is assigned a coach that takes each team from the selection process, through training, and into the game play on gala day.  Training is compulsory and failure to attend can impact a student’s selection in the final team.
GBS gala days utilise a round robin format that incorporate a carnival style day to compact what could be a massive event into a daylong tournament. Teams compete for points in each round that determine a final four.  Points are allocated for each position (1st, 2nd. 3rd, etc) and at the end of the meet a school is named as Champion School.  MVPs are also named per age group.  At the end of the six events a champion school will be named and they hold the trophy for the year.
Coaches for each of our competing teams will be released on this website as will training times and dates as well as permission forms that are required for each event.
Equipment and uniforms are provided for each student when required.
